Understanding IV Therapy: Who benefits and why

8 min read · by the SisterB clinical team

Intravenous (IV) therapy delivers vitamins, minerals and amino acids directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system so that 100% of the nutrients are available to your cells within minutes. At SisterB, every drip is prescribed, prepared and administered by a qualified practitioner in a calm, medically-supervised setting.

Why intravenous and not tablets?

When you swallow a supplement, it must survive stomach acid, be broken down in the small intestine and pass through the liver before any of it reaches your bloodstream. Depending on the nutrient, only 10–50% ever makes it — less if you have reflux, IBS, are on chronic medication, or have recently had a stomach bug. An infusion skips all of that. Nutrients enter the circulation at full strength, which means we can safely reach therapeutic levels of vitamin C, B-complex, magnesium or glutathione that simply are not achievable orally. You also rehydrate at the same time. A litre of balanced fluid does as much for fatigue and headache as the vitamins themselves.

Who typically benefits

Busy professionals recovering from burnout, poor sleep or long-haul travel. Athletes loading before an event or recovering after training. Patients recovering from flu, gastro, dehydration or a recent hospital stay. Women wanting brighter, more even skin tone (Skin Glow / Power Glow). People on weight-management journeys who need energy and metabolic support. Anyone with poor gut absorption, low iron symptoms or chronic low energy. Post-event or post-hangover recovery and rapid rehydration.

Our drip menu at a glance

Energy Booster — B-complex, B12 and amino acids to lift mental and physical stamina. Immune Support — high-dose vitamin C, zinc and antioxidants during flu season or before travel. Skin Glow & Power Glow — glutathione and vitamin C for brightness, even tone and antioxidant support. Detox — supports liver pathways after a heavy period of alcohol, medication or illness. Hangover Recovery — fluid, anti-nausea and electrolyte replacement in under an hour. Weight Loss / Turbocharge — metabolic and lipotropic support alongside diet and movement. Not sure which one fits? We choose it with you during the screening — you never have to self-diagnose.

What to expect on the day

A short health screening and consultation: medications, allergies, kidney and heart history, pregnancy status. We check blood pressure and pulse, and confirm the drip formulation with you. A fine cannula is placed in a vein in your arm or hand — a few seconds of discomfort, no more. The drip runs for 30–60 minutes while you sit back, work, read or nap. We remove the cannula, apply a small dressing and watch you for a few minutes before you go. Most clients feel the benefit the same day; the full effect settles over 24–48 hours.

How to prepare

Eat a normal meal beforehand — infusions on an empty stomach can make you lightheaded. Drink water in the hours before your appointment; well-hydrated veins are easier and more comfortable to cannulate. Wear a top with sleeves that roll up easily. Bring a list of your chronic medication and any known allergies. Avoid alcohol on the day of your appointment.

How often should you have one?

For general wellness, most clients do well with one infusion every 4–6 weeks. For a specific goal — skin brightening, a recovery block, or an immune course before winter — we usually plan a short series of 3–6 sessions closer together, then space them out. For acute problems like gastro, flu or a hangover, a single drip is often all that's needed. We will always tell you if a drip is not the right answer and a consultation, bloods or a referral would serve you better.

Is it safe? Who should not have a drip

Yes — when administered by a qualified practitioner. We screen every client for contraindications, use sterile single-use consumables and monitor you throughout the infusion. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild: a cool sensation along the arm, a metallic taste with certain vitamins, mild bruising at the cannula site, or needing the bathroom afterwards. We will defer or decline a drip if you have significant kidney or heart failure, are pregnant or breastfeeding (unless specifically cleared), have a known G6PD deficiency (high-dose vitamin C), or are acutely unwell in a way that needs emergency care rather than a drip. If you are on chronic medication, tell us — a few drugs interact with high-dose vitamins and we will adjust the formulation.
