Virtual consultations are convenient, POPIA-compliant and often perfectly suited to everyday medical concerns. But some visits genuinely need hands-on assessment. Here's how to decide.
A virtual consult works well for
Repeat prescriptions and chronic medication reviews. Minor ailments: cold and flu symptoms, mild UTIs, headaches, rashes you can show on camera. Mental health check-ins, contraceptive counselling and lifestyle advice. Follow-ups after an in-clinic visit or blood results discussions. Sick notes and referral letters. Second opinions and pre-travel advice.
Book in-clinic when
You need a physical examination (abdominal pain, ear/throat exam, breast check). You need bloods, urine tests, a pap smear, ultrasound or an IV drip. You're pregnant and due for an antenatal visit. A child is unwell and needs to be examined — especially under 2 years. You need a procedure: wound care, family planning implant or injection, vaccinations. Symptoms are severe, sudden or getting worse.
Go straight to an emergency unit for
Chest pain, difficulty breathing or fainting. Stroke signs: facial droop, weakness on one side, sudden confusion or slurred speech. Heavy uncontrolled bleeding or a serious injury. A seizure, or a child who is floppy, unresponsive or breathing fast. Telehealth is not the right channel for emergencies — call an ambulance or go to your nearest casualty.
How the virtual consult flow works
Book online and complete a short intake form. You'll receive a secure video link via WhatsApp or SMS — no downloads. Join the 20-minute call from anywhere in South Africa. We take a history, review any photos or readings you've sent, and agree a plan. Digital scripts, sick notes and referrals are sent straight to your inbox. If we decide you need hands-on care, we'll say so and help you book in-clinic.
How to get the most out of your video call
Find a quiet, well-lit space — natural light in front of you, not behind. Test your data or Wi-Fi beforehand and have your phone charged. Have your medication boxes, previous results and any home readings (BP, glucose, temperature) at hand. Take clear, close-up photos of any rash or wound in good light before the call. Write down your top three concerns so nothing gets forgotten.
Privacy and your records
Consultations happen over an encrypted link and are handled in line with POPIA. We do not record calls without your consent, your notes are stored in your confidential clinical file, and scripts and referrals are sent only to the contact details you confirm with us.
Still not sure?
Send us a WhatsApp describing the problem in a sentence or two. We'll tell you honestly whether a virtual consult will do the job or whether you should come in — no charge for that guidance.
